How to distinguish the authenticity of fire rated door hardware?

Publish Time: 2021-08-05     Origin: D and D Hardware

If you need to install new hardware on a door, but are not sure if it has a fire rating. What should I have to do to know this?

Before making any modifications to a door, it is important to know if the door has a fire rating. Modifications to certain products and doors can affect the door's ability to pass through the opening.

If non-fire resistant hardware is fitted to a fire door, the entire door opening will lose its fire rating. For example, non-fireproof locks are not constructed to withstand the heat and/or pressure generated by a fire and the door can be damaged and opened, resulting in the rapid passage of flames.

Door fittings with fire resistance must be fire tested and certified by the relevant authorities. Certified products will carry the fire rated door hardware label.

How to find the hardware label for fire door?

So how do you know if your door is fire resistant? You should look for the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) fire label. Sometimes labels are not difficult to find and here are some handy tips for finding a fire label.

1. Look at the hinge side of the door. ( Learn about the various UL) tags you might see. The key component to look for is the circled "UL".

If installed on a wooden door, the fire label can be located on the hinge side or top of the door.

Over time, the label may become soiled or scratched, so check carefully for any raised surfaces.

The label can also be located on the top or bottom of the door.

Some labels are embossed on the frame, so be sure to touch any textured/raised surfaces.

UL File No.R38013.

2. Observe the surface of the mortise lock. Certified locks will have the label or label number printed on the panel.

UL File No.R40901.

3. View the door closer. Certified door closers are labelled on the side of the body of the door closer or on the surface of the push rod.

UL File No.R40717.

4. Check out the panic bar. Certified panic bars will have the label or label number printed on the cover.

UL File No.R40486.

5. Look at the door viewer. Certified door viewers will have the label or label number printed on the viewer body.

UL File No.R41286

The following standards are the current requirements on fire doors:

1.All hardware must pass the relevant fire certification.

2.Each door and hardware has a label to enable its surface to pass the relevant fire test.

3.If the label is damaged, only a license can be applied for.
