1. Why do we need to certify the hinge?
The new European standard EN 1634:2014 stipulated that frames, doors and door hardware must be tested and certified. The use of fire-rated doors is not optional, but mandatory if installed on fire doors.
2. How to certify the fire hinge?
2-1. Consider the impact of the fire on the door. The door must block the fire for at least 30 minutes, usually withstands temperatures over 1000 degrees Celsius. The door will be warped and charred eventually, and there are often considerable air pressure differences between both sides of the door. Fireproof certified hinges can resist heat of 1000 ° C for 180 minutes and then exceeds the hose flow test: a 3-minute test in which the door is repeatedly subjected to water flow impact under pressure. 2-2. When used with a door closer, the wear of the hinges is greatly increased. The rule of thumb is to increase the standard door closer by 20% and the backward checker by 75%. The design of the fire door hinge takes the extra weight into account.

A standard hollow door weighs about 15 kg, while the 30-minute fire-rated door usually weighs about 40 kg, that is to say, the heavier the door is, the stronger the fire endurance is.
