The Dormitory or Exit Lock features a latch bolt that is operated by the lever from either the inside or the outside, allowing free egress and access under normal conditions. The only exception is when the outside lever is rendered inoperative by a stop, a mechanical block, or any means other than a key — once disabled, the outside lever cannot be used to drive the latch bolt, effectively preventing exit or entry through that side without alternative operation. In addition to the latch bolt, the lock incorporates a dead bolt that serves as the primary locking element. This dead bolt is projected (extended) by turning a key from the outside or by operating a thumbturn from the inside, and it is retracted by key from the outside or by thumbturn from the inside as well. The dead bolt thus provides a manually controlled, positive lock that can only be engaged or disengaged through deliberate action, rather than by the automatic spring action of the latch bolt.
A key operational feature of this lock is that when the inside lever is operated, it simultaneously retracts both the latch bolt and the dead bolt, allowing the door to be opened from the inside with a single lever action. Critically, however, the outside lever remains locked during this process — meaning that even though both bolts are withdrawn and the door can be pushed or pulled open from within, the outside lever stays inoperative and cannot be used to open the door from that side. This design ensures that occupants inside can always exit quickly and easily (meeting fire-safety egress requirements), while the outside side remains secured and cannot be lever-operated until the stop or mechanical block is removed. The combination of lever-operated latch bolt, key-and-thumbturn-operated dead bolt, and the inside-lever-retracts-both-bolts logic makes this lock ideal for dormitory rooms, emergency exits, and similar applications where rapid interior egress must coexist with controlled exterior access.
