The Holdback Lock features a latch bolt that is operated by the lever from either the inside or the outside under normal conditions, providing convenient access from both sides. The sole exception occurs when the outside lever is locked from the exterior using a key — once locked, the outside lever is rendered inoperative and can no longer be used to drive the latch bolt. This design prevents unauthorized manipulation of the lock from outside while preserving full functionality from the interior. Additionally, the latch bolt itself can be locked in a fully retracted position by key, independent of the lever lock. When the outside lever is locked, the latch bolt can still be retracted either by key from the outside or by operating the inside lever — however, if the latch bolt has been previously locked in the retracted position by key, the inside lever will no longer be able to retract it. This creates a one-way control logic: once the latch is held retracted from outside, occupants inside cannot override that state without external key access.
The lock is further equipped with an auxiliary dead latch, which serves as a secondary locking point separate from the primary latch bolt. This auxiliary mechanism is typically mounted on the side or top of the lock body and provides an additional barrier against forced entry, particularly in scenarios where the main latch bolt might be compromised — such as being shimmed or pushed back at an angle. The dead latch must be engaged or disengaged through its own dedicated operation (usually a key from the outside or a thumb-turn from the inside), and it functions independently of the lever-operated latch bolt. Together, the lever-based holdback function, the key-controlled outside lever lock, the retracted-position lock, and the auxiliary dead latch form a layered security system that balances everyday usability with robust access control, making it well-suited for applications where both convenience and restricted entry management are required.
