Why ANSI/BHMA Certification Is Non-Negotiable on Commercial Projects
When a hardware schedule reaches procurement, manufacturer-claimed specifications are a liability. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association (BHMA) administer the only independently verified performance grading system for door hardware in North America — every certified hinge is tested at a BHMA-accredited laboratory, and certification is never self-reported.
 
Specifying hinges certified to both standards below protects contractors and building owners from the liability of premature hardware failure, simplifies architect approvals, and guarantees that published performance figures are reproducible in the field.

When traffic volume is uncertain, select up. The unit price difference between Grade 2 and Grade 1 is negligible against 
the labor cost of one early hinge replacement — or one failed inspection that stalls a certificate of occupancy.

A weighted door is machine-cycled continuously until the grade threshold is reached — 2,500,000 swings for Grade 1. The hinge must finish with alignment, smooth operation and lateral/vertical wear inside tolerance.
Strength & Wear  - A156.1 · Load / Friction
─────────────────────────────────────
Lateral wear, vertical wear, friction and strength tests verify the leaf, knuckle and pin geometry under load. Material gauge and fastener counts are prescribed per hinge height — nothing is left to interpretation.
 
Corrosion Resistance  - A156.18 · ASTM B117
