Ball bearing hinges appear similar to regular butt hinges in appearance. The only difference lies in the pivot area, where there are actually hidden ball bearings situated between the hinges' lower end, either by metal profiles or by a few of the hinges themselves. When you look down on the ball bearing housing from the front, it appears to be protruding outwards, and this protrusion is the ball bearing housing's lower end. These types of hinges are typically used for sliding doors, where the sliding movement requires a fastening mechanism that can quickly engage with the ball bearing housing without any resistance from the hinges themselves, and without trapping parts of the interior track within the housing.

Some people may shy away from these types of door hinges because they view them as being 'expensive'. This is generally not the case, however, as these types of hinges come in a variety of different styles, sizes, and materials. For example, stainless steel door hinges are very economical, as they have very few moving parts, and as such, are more reliable than their 'brighter' counterparts (such as aluminum door hinges). Additionally, stainless steel offers some degree of corrosion resistance (this is another reason why they are so popular in kitchens). In addition to saving money, this door hinges also save time. Instead of manually opening and closing all of your doors every time you go in and out, you can just open the hinges on your doorways when you need to go in and out - and this will save you time, as well as preventing you from tripping over loose hinges as you try to operate your door with a remote control.

There are a variety of other styles of door hinges, which are not mentioned here. The most commonly found types of door hinge are the normal ball-bearing models and these are what most people think of when they hear the term 'ball-bearing door hinges'. However, there exist other door hinges, such as the double-sided radius corner hinge, and these have their place in many homes. The type of door hinge you choose will depend largely on the style of your home, as well as your personal preferences. Luckily, there are many varieties to choose from, so it should be quite easy to find a hinge that matches the style and architecture of your home.
