The latch bolt on an Intruder Dead Bolt Lock is normally operated by the lever handle from either side of the door, allowing convenient access for authorized users. However, this free lever operation can be disabled when the outside lever is locked using a key from either the inside or the outside, rendering the exterior handle completely inoperative and preventing any attempt to retract the latch bolt from outside. The dead bolt, which serves as the primary security locking point, can only be retracted by inserting a key and turning it from either the inside or the outside. This ensures that the dead bolt remains engaged against forced entry unless properly authorized with a key.

When the inside lever is operated, it simultaneously retracts both the latch bolt and the dead bolt while also unlocking the outside lever, allowing occupants to exit the room quickly with a single action. In addition to this integrated egress mechanism, the lock features an auxiliary dead latch or a latch bolt that becomes dead locked when the dead bolt is thrown.
